Today we will discuss the benefits of a bike fitting and who should get one.
As a general rule, anyone riding a bike for anything more than the random recreational ride every couple of months could benefit on multiple levels from getting a proper bike fit. When we ride a bicycle regularly, we run the risk of injury to our knees primarily if the fit isn't correct. When pedaling we shouldn't experience knee pain or discomfort. A bicycle with the seat to high or to low for the rider can cause knee issues. In addition to the seat needing to be in a proper position to prevent pain or injury; the handle bars also have to be in an appropriate place for the rider to either help get better core engagement or position the rider so that they are upright and have their head on top of their shoulders and their shoulders on top of their hips making for a very neutrally positioned spine.
Proper core engagement does several things for the rider. One, it allows the rider to push the pedals with more power as the core is engaged and allowing for more power out of the lower extremities. In addition to more power, the core engagement usually allows the rider to have lighter hand pressure, more relaxed shoulders and not have the craning effect on the neck when trying to look down the road.
So, in closing, anyone riding a bike for fitness, commuting or racing could benefit from a bicycle fitting.
